In recent years, the SCDF has reported an increasing trend in fires involving kitchen exhaust ducts (KED), which pose significant fire safety risks to both the property and its occupants, especially in multi-tenant buildings.
Businesses with kitchens located near residential areas or on top of common walkways are required to install fire-rated ductwork. According to the SCDF Fire Code, any exhaust ducting within 5 meters of a residential window or above a common walkway must be fire-rated with a minimum 1-hour fire resistance.
